FAQ SKIN

Q. How often should I exfoliate?

A. Younger skin has a faster turn-over rate than mature skin and therefore, will usually require fewer exfoliation sessions than more mature skin. How often you should exfoliate is dependent upon both your age and the condition of your skin. The standard recommendation is: one time per week at a minimum. However, 2-3 times a week for those 30 years+ is recommended.

Q. How much serum should I use?

A. Serums are potent and can dry out the skin if too much is used. Apply a thin layer, which will be sufficient to do the work.

Q. How fast will I see results using Kalaiaah’s AHA products, Vitamin C Serum or Retinol Serum?

A. Many users of AHA, Vitamin C Serum and Retinol Serums report appreciable results within the first week. However, in 2 weeks you will notice a better texture, tone, glow, and a more moisturized and plump feeling to the skin. After one month, new collagen stimulated by the use of serums and by following your skincare routine, will be noticeable.

Q. Do serums penetrate deeper below the surface than other skin care products?

A. Yes. Serums are molecularly structured, which allow them to penetrate deeper into the pores and layers of the skin, as oppose to other treatments, which many lay on the surface of the skin and are not as effective.

Q. You have protocols using Vitamin C Serum and Retinol Serums & Moisturizers; are these safe to use together?

A. Kalaiaah Organic skincare serums are great when combined with retinol and/or retinol moisturizers. Apply your serum and allow to dry before applying retinol and lastly, apply your moisturizer.

Q. In what order should I apply my other skin care products with my serums?

A. Exfoliate-Cleanse-Tone-Serum-Spot Treat (if necessary)-Moisturize or if you are short on time, exfoliate during the evening and begin your routine on the following morning with cleansing.

Natural Hair: Frequently Asked Questions:

Q. Why doesn’t my hair grow?

A. All hair grows. As long as you are alive without a medical condition that stunts or ceases hair growth, your hair is consistently growing. However, if you are not maintaining your hair by protecting it from damage, breakage and other detrimental occurrences, you will not retain your new growth or hair length. Therefore, it will appear as though your hair is not growing at all. Retaining your “new growth” will make your hair growth more apparent to yourself and to others.

Q. How fast does hair grow?

A. The rate at which hair grows varies depending on the individual. The rate at which hair grows can be impacted by genetics. However, the average rate of hair growth is approximately 0.5 inches per month and 6 inches per year.

Q. How do I retain length?

A. Length retention can be achieved in many ways. The key to length retention is protecting your hair and maintaining healthy hair. This means keeping your hair moisturized, protecting your hair from heat damage, trimming your ends when necessary, minimizing strenuous hair maintenance and maintaining a healthy diet.

Q. What is hair typing?

A. Hair typing is classifying one’s hair texture on a scale of various hair groups. Some people opt not to type their hair texture as they feel it is a means of categorizing their natural beauty. Others find hair typing useful while learning their hair and the best products to utilize to achieve optimal results.

Q. What are the best products to use on my hair?

A. This varies with the individual. The best products to use on your hair come down to experimentation and preference.

Q. What is a protective style?

A. A protective style is a style that protects your hair from breakage, heat and maintenance. A protective style usually focuses on protecting and preserving the ends of your hair so that length retention can be achieved. Protective styles range from wigs, weaves, braids, twists and buns.

Q. When is the best time to utilize a protective style?

A. The best time to use a protective style is when your hair is at the most risk for damage and/or breakage. Putting your hair away from a few weeks or months will allow your hair to weather through the harsh months and/or lazier months when you have no desire to maintain your hair on your own.

Q. What type of protective style is best for me?

A. The best type of protective style for you depends on your preference. Completing research on the type of style you are interested is highly recommended as protective styles can vary depending on price, length, style and longevity.

Q. Is it possible to expedite hair growth?

A. Hair growth can be expedited via hair vitamins and/or supplements. Some hair growth oils that include elements such as sulfur MSM and biotin have also proven to aid in hair growth.

Q. Do hair vitamins work?

A. Hair vitamins have proven to be a great asset for expedited hair growth when used consistently. It is recommended that one increase his or her water intake while utilizing hair supplements. This can prevent breakouts and will allow the body to absorb the nutrients more effectively.

Q. Why do hair vitamins cause acne?

A. Whenever a new supplement or element is introduced into your body, it must adapt appropriately. This adaptation can reflect in one’s skin. Increasing one’s water intake can reduce the possibility of breakouts significantly.

Q. Does heat maintenance really cause damage?

A. If your hair is not naturally straight, heat can cause extensive damage by altering your curl pattern and weakening your hair shaft. Weakened hair often leads to split ends, breakage (which lowers the ability to retain length).

Q. Is it possible to protect my hair while using heat?

A. Your hair can be protected while using heat, but only to a certain extent. Heat protectants coat the exterior of the hair and absorb some of the damaging heat rays so that the impact on the hair is minimized. However, heat protectants and/or serums can only do so much. Pay attention to the degree setting on your heat styling tools. This also plays a major part in protecting your hair from damage.

Q. What is healthy hair?

A. The definition of health hair varies with the individual. In the natural hair community, it is commonly believed that the closest one’s hair is to its natural state, the healthier it is. For our processed friends, healthy hair may mean long hair. This definition varies depending on whom you ask.

Q. Can hair growth vary by the individual?

A. Your hair texture can have a minor impact on how fast your hair grows. However, the average remains 0.5 inches per month and 6 inches per year.

Q. Can hair growth be stunted?

A. Stress, drugs/alcohol and an unhealthy diet can stunt hair growth in some individuals or prevent it from reach its true growth potential. Certain medical conditions can also impact hair growth. Consult a physician if you believe your hair growth may be stunted by an existing condition.

Q. Can drinking more water aid in the health and growth of my hair?

A. Drinking more water can aid in the health of one’s hair. The healthier your hair is, the better it will grow and the easier it will be to retain length. Healthy hair is stronger and more resilient than malnourished hair.

Q. What does hair porosity mean?

A. Hair porosity measures the ability that one’s hair can absorb moisture. Hair porosity ranges from low, average (or normal), and high. You can test the porosity of your hair at home by dipping clean strands of hair in a glass of water. If your strands sink immediately, you have high porosity hair and vice versa.

Q. How does dye impact hair health?

A. Using dye on hair often requires stripping the hair of its natural color and nutrients. This inevitably weakens the hair. Coupling dying with heat maintenance is often a recipe for disaster regardless of the health of one’s hair – it will be impacted.

Q. How often should I trim my hair?

A. You should trim your hair whenever you see an excess of split ends, breaking ends, dry or brittle ends and single strand knots. The timeframe may vary depending on how you style your hair and how often you use heat.

Q. What are split ends?

A. Split ends are a result of the splitting of the hair shaft due to excessive maintenance, heat or stress from tension on the hair. Split ends continue to travel up the hair shaft weakening it until they are cut off.

Q. How can I resolve split ends?

A. The only way to resolve split ends is by cutting them off.

Q. What are single strand knots?

A. Single strand knots are knots that occur at the end of one’s hair strands. These are commonly accepted as being a natural result of one wearing his or her hair in a natural state. However, the continued maintenance and regular detangling of one’s hair can greatly decrease the occurrence of single strand knots.

Q. How can I resolve single strand knots?

A. The only way to resolve single strand knots is by cutting them off.

Q. Can my hair type impact how easy my hair breaks off?

A. Yes. If your hair grows straight naturally, it is easier for oil to travel down the hair shaft, thus allowing the hair to maintain moisture easier. This allows the hair to be more resilient to drying and breakage. If your hair grows kinky or curly naturally, oil cannot travel down the hair shaft as easily. Therefore, this texture of hair is more susceptible to drying and breakage. One must intensify his or her hair regimen to maintain hair moisture and prevent breakage if his or her hair is kinky, coily or curly. There may be exceptions to this depending on whether one’s hair is naturally oily regardless to his or her texture.

Q. Where can I find a wealth of knowledge for more natural hair tips?

A. YouTube can be an excellent resource for visual hair tips, tricks and knowledge. Please see PeaceOfCole who is the contributing author for our natural hair care FAQ.
